I recently visited to Kitchener, ON for the weekend, I’m always looking for new local destinations to travel to over the weekend, especially over the long winter months. We stayed at the beautiful newly renovated Walper Hotel in the heart of downtown Kitchener. The Walper Hotel first opened its doors in 1893, at the time it was the definition of a luxury hotel, today it is just as beautiful but with a new modern and chic look. The hotel is also a great location for weddings, work functions and other events. One of my best friends is having her wedding reception there this summer.
Fun fact: Some guests that have stayed at the Walper include Eleanor Roosevelt, Sarah McLachlan, Madonna, Lady Gaga, David Copperfield, Stephen King and more recently Justin and Sophie Trudeau.
The hotel has a restaurant, the TWH Social which is open for brunch (on the weekends), lunch and dinner as well as a beautiful bar and lounge, The Lokal, which is great for cocktails and small bites (please note the bar is often closed weekends for weddings and other functions).
Places to visit while in Kitchener;
Public, they have tapas style food as well as a cute little market style space where they serve snacks and lunch
Smile Tiger Coffee, which is also the inhouse roaster for The Walper, The Lokal and TWH Social
The Bauer Kitchen
Golden Hearth Bakery
Another great place to visit if you’re in the area is the St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market. There are rows and rows of people selling fresh local grown fruit, vegetables and flowers as well as there are a ton of baked goods. If I lived in the area this is where I’d buy all my fruits and vegetables.
If antiquing is your things, next door is the St. Jacobs Antiques Market, you never know what gem you might fine. Also Aberfoyle Antique Market is not too far away, we hit it up on the way back to Toronto.
If you’re into beer, Kitchener hosts the second largest Oktoberfest happening again this year October 5th -13th. If you don’t have any Oktoberfest gear don’t worry they got you covered with an official Oktoberfest store about a 2-minute walk from the Walper Hotel at 17 Benton Street.
Lastly while in Kitchener I got to visit BMW Grand River and test drive the new 540 Xdrive which is part of the 5 Series line up. I don’t know much about cars, but this car was a beauty. Beside the exterior and interior being beautiful, it drove like a dream. The dealership staff was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. If I was in the market for a car this is where I’d be going!
A special thank you to the Walper Hotel for hosting me and BMW Grand River for letting me test drive the 540 Xdrive for the weekend.
